Spinal Problems- Definition and Common Samples

A spinal disorder is a term used to describe a problem with the spine. Some examples are scoliosis and spondylosis, and disc degeneration, sciatica, fractured vertebrae, osteoarthritis, slipped disk, cervical spondylosis, spinal stenosis, and tumor. These are medical conditions that affect the spine, which can cause problems when it comes to mobility.

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves abnormally to one side, and is more common in women than men. Symptoms include:

  • painful, stiff back
  • breathing problems (from constricted or restricted chest)
  • shorter height when compared to other people of the same age and sex
  • pain in the neck
  • a feeling of instability when standing up or sitting down
  • difficulty breathing deeply, swallowing, or laughing
  • difficult to sleep at night!

Spondylosis - Spondylosis is a condition in which the spinal discs, ligaments and joints of vertebrae are affected. Spondylosis is a type of arthritis that happens when the discs and joints in your spine degenerate. When this occurs, it can impair how well you move or affect nerves around the body. Symptoms include:

  • pain in your neck
  • difficulty walking or standing up straight
  • pain on one side of your spine when bending over to tie shoelaces!

Disc generation- Disc generation is also known as spinal wear, is a condition in which the natural discs of your spine break down with age. The breakdown can cause pain and discomfort.

Spinal Stenosis- Spinal stenosis is a condition in which the spinal canal is narrowed. This can result in pain and other symptoms that are often felt from your neck to the hips.

Sciatica- is a condition that occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated. Symptoms of spinal stenosis include pain, numbness, and tingling in your legs.

Fractured vertebrae- Spinal fractures are much rarer but can cause some serious symptoms such as sudden loss of sensation to the arms and hands, severe back pain that gets worse over time, and paralysis.

Spinal Cord Injury- Spinal cord injury is a condition in which the spinal cord is damaged. Spinal cord injury is caused by an accident or traumatic event. Symptoms include paralysis, loss of sensation.

Spinal Tumors- Spinal tumors can cause serious symptoms such as pain that gets worse over time and numbness in the extremities or paralysis. Spinal tumors are caused by an abnormal growth of cells.

Spinal Infection- spinal infections are caused by bacteria or a virus that enters the spine and spreads throughout the body, often causing meningitis - inflammation of the membrane around your brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include neck pain with fever, high temperature, headache, stiff neck, vomiting.

Osteoporosis - it is a condition in which the bones become more fragile and prone to fracture because they lose calcium. It can lead to spinal fractures, such as a compression fracture in your back or neck - when an area of bone is suddenly crushed under pressure from the bodily weight.

What are the Causes of Spinal Disorders?

There are many factors that can cause spinal disorders. Some of them include:

Genetics  – Genetics is one factor in which there could be a family history of scoliosis, arthritis, or back problems. Certain people have genes which make it easier to develop spinal issues later on in their life, and other people may not get any symptoms until much later.

Injuries   – Injuries such as trauma from an accident are also risks for developing spine-related disorders. As the person ages, they will more than likely experience pain or mobility issues due to this injury lingering around overtime without being treated properly. All injuries should be taken care of right away so they don't lead to future problems with your spine when you're older!

Pregnancy   –  Pregnant women who are experiencing pain in their back should consult a doctor and have an X-Ray done to rule out any serious spinal problems. The birth process does increase the risk of developing lumbar disc herniation, stenosis, or spondylolisthesis after pregnancy.

Poor posture- poor posture is an example of a lifestyle habit that can cause spine problems. Sitting in the same position, slouching over your desk while working on homework, or sitting at your computer and not adjusting back into a neutral posture after long hours are all examples of poor postural habits.

Obesity - this can lead to excess weight on your back with associated pressure that may cause disc injuries.

Additionally, some diseases such as cancer can cause neuropathy or nerve damage that causes back pain which is classified under "spinal disorders."

Some other reasons for having a spinal disorder are arthritis in the spine, tumors on the spine, and osteoporosis.

What are the Symptoms of Spinal Disorder?

Symptoms can vary depending on what type of spine problem an individual may have. One common symptom of back pain or low-back ache due to spinal disorders is difficulty sitting down because it becomes painful in that area when they sit for long periods of time or after prolonged standing. Painful tingling sensations (paresthesia) going up one leg from foot to buttocks could be a sign that there's something wrong with their lower back; this sensation could also be a sign of sciatica.

Symptoms may also be caused by another medical condition associated with the vertebrae (bones) in your neck area. These could include:

  • intense headaches
  • numbness or tingling sensations in arms or legs
  • weakness in an arm or leg
  • difficulty walking/standing up straight
  • abnormal reflexes & movement patterns when compared to normal people
  • constant pain
  • paralysis on one side of the body
  • inability to balance while walking
  • inflammation in the spinal cord

What are the Treatment Options for Spinal Problems?

The good news is that there are many treatment options for spinal problems, which Dr. Arthur Hoffman can discuss with you in detail during your consultation appointment. The treatment options for spinal problems depend on the type and severity. The following are some of the common treatments associated with a variety of spinal conditions:

Chiropractic Adjustments/ Spinal Adjustments- these involve gentle manual manipulation to relieve pressure on irritated nerves or muscles. Dr. Arthur Hoffman can use these for conditions such as:

  • back pain
  • medial/lateral spinal stenosis (a narrowing of the spinal canal that causes pressure on nerves)
  • cervical spondylitis, or degenerative disc disease and herniated discs in the cervical spine
  • neck pain
  • sciatica, or radiating leg pain from a spinal cord problem in the lower back
  • cervical radiculopathy (pinched nerve) and cervical myelopathy (condition of pressure on the spinal cord)

Spinal Decompression Therapy- this involves the use of specialized tables or other devices to gradually decrease spinal pressure and relieve discomfort. Dr. Arthur Hoffman offers spinal decompression therapy through either traction devices like axillary supports or lumbar support belts.

Dr. Arthur Hoffman may recommend these for conditions such as:

  • lumbar herniated discs
  • spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
  • failed back surgery syndrome, or chronic radicular symptoms from lumbosacral spinal stenosis
  • spinal compression fractures

Massage Therapy- Dr. Arthur Hoffman will train your therapist to provide the most effective deep tissue massage. This will help to alleviate pain and relax muscle spasms

Dr. Arthur Hoffman also provides feedback to the patient on their body's response to spinal treatments. Patients can learn how they can reduce or eliminate certain symptoms of a spinal disorder by changing posture, breathing patterns, or relaxation techniques.
